Renters should exercise caution when signing paperwork as it relates to replacing one occupant with another. Management provides forms that relieve them of the obligation of returning security deposits and places that burden on the renters occupying the apartment. This is not made clear to renters. When leaving the apartment at end of lease, management did not comply with state law by providing in writing a summary of charges against the security deposit, but rather simply placed the burden of how to deal with the deposit on the remaining renters. Management keeps the deposits while students find themselves in the awkward position of fighting with one another. It becomes easier to simply let Landmark keep the deposits and move on. This is unacceptable.
