Fort Collins Information
HISTORIC OLD TOWN SQUARE Old Town Square is rich in Fort Collins history and community. In 1981 Mitchell and company of Denver unveiled a plan to turn Old Town into a viable business district by preserving historic buildings and building new structures to compliment the original ones. The oldest surviving business in Fort Collins is City Drug, which can trace its' origins to 1873, when a Wyoming pharmacist, M. E. Hocker, and Fort Collins businessman William C. Stover opened a drug store in the old sutlers' store, Old Grout. The business has changed hands and been moved several times. It is now located on the southwest corner of College and Mountain.

AVERY HOUSE A prominent figure in Fort Collins history is Franklin C. Avery. He developed the plans for the city streets and also named them. Avery opened the area for business to flourish with his bank, First National Bank and the Akin Live Stock Company. His success allowed him to build a prestigious four bedroom Victorian house made of sandstone bricks mined from the area. In it?s time and today, his house is one of the grandest around. It has been fully restored and is filled with antiques from the 1800?s. The Avery House is open year round for tours, teas and other small events. 970-221-0533

GRANDVIEW CEMETERY The Grandview Cemetery is a fascinating place to learn more about Fort Collins. The 45 acres where this cemetery is located, is actually the third location. The Post Cemetery and the Mountain Home Cemetery were the two prior locations and as the population grew the need for more burial sites also grew. Each time they decided to move, all the graves had to be dug up and moved as well. W.W. Westfall, of company j, 13th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry, who died on November 3, 1865, was buried at all three sites. His grave currently lies on the front edge of the special Soldiers Section. In this area, standing tall above gravesites of veterans from the Spanish-American war, both world wars and the Korean War is a life-sized figure of a Union Civil War soldier erected in 1905. 970-221-6810
